We hope you have a lovely break over the festive period! This is just to let you know that OCSI will be closed Thursday 21st December – Wednesday 2nd January. We will not be able to respond to support requests during this time. We will answer any support requests when the office re-opens on Wednesday 3rd January.

As another year draws to a close, we would like to thank you for your continued support and interest in Community Insight. We are looking forward to what 2018 will bring!

Data updates in Community Insight

Monthly data updates

This month we have a number of updates from Land Registry, Police UK, Department for Work and Pensions and Ofcom, as well as updating the reports. Indicators included are:

  • Average house price, broken down by house type
  • Number of property transactions, broken down by house type
  • Incidents of crime, broken down by offence type
  • Recipients of unemployment benefit, broken down by age, time period and gender
  • Postcodes with low broadband speed

Please note:

  • Community Insight Scotland
    • Both broadband indicators are new indicators
    • Land Registry and Police UK indicators will not be updated (this includes Average house, Number of property transactions and Incidents of crime)
  • Community Insight Wales
    • Both broadband indicators are new indicators
  • The ‘Low broadband speed’ indicators differ slightly from the old indicator it replaces. The new indicators give a % of broadband connections that have speeds < 2Mbits/s. The old indicator gave proportion of postcodes with slow internet

Greenspaces data in Community Insight

We have also added two Greenspaces datasets this month: Greenspace coverage, total (this show the percentage of an area that is covered by green space) and Greenspace coverage, public parks and gardens (this shows the percentage of an area that is covered by public parks and gardens). For more information on use cases and how the data was put together see our blog postor for more information on how to view the data in Community Insight and what’s included in the data, see our blog post here.

Greenspaces data in Community Insight

New greenspace datasets

Data on greenspaces has now been added to our Community Insight tool!

Where is the data from?

The data has been taken from Ordnance Survey’s Open Greenspace data. The data depicts the location and extent of spaces such as parks and sports facilities that are likely to be accessible to the public.

The full technical specification and product guide are available online for the data heroes among us!

How do I understand the data?

We have taken the raw data and converted it into a format compatible with Community Insight. For more information on how we converted this data check out our blog.

How do I access the data on Community Insight?

There are two greenspaces indicators available on Community Insight:

  • Greenspace coverage, total
    • This show the percentage of an area that is covered by green space.
  • Greenspace coverage, public parks and gardens
    • This shows the percentage of an area that is covered by public parks and gardens.

Please note: The ‘Greenspace coverage, total’ definition includes allotments or community growing spaces, bowling greens, cemeteries, religious grounds, golf courses, other sports facilities, play spaces, playing fields, public parks or gardens and tennis courts. There are open spaces that aren’t covered under the greenspaces definition (for example, national parks), therefore large portions of the countryside may not be considered in this dataset.

To add these datasets to the map you will need to click on the Group Admin tab and go to the Manage Indicators page. The indicators can then be found in the ‘Unassigned’ theme. Then either create a new theme or drag and drop them into an existing theme. Don’t forget once you have moved them into a theme you need to tick the box to show on the map and/or dashboard.
